Study: False statements preceded war

By DOUGLASS K. DANIEL, Associated Press Writer 8 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - A study by two nonprofit journalism organizations found that President Bush and top administration officials issued hundreds of false statements about the national security threat from Iraq in the two years following the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The study concluded that the statements "were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses."

The study was posted Tuesday on the Web site of the Center for Public Integrity, which worked with the Fund for Independence in Journalism...

I say hurry up because I think this is a story that will disappear rather quickly. Britney might do something outrageous or something. Also, in a day or two, we can expect some group like The Cato Institute or The American Enterprise Institute to "debunk" the report and keep the false debate alive for those who would rather not believe such things about our country, its leaders, and themselves.

You were right. Heath Ledger died & this story left the front pages. Of course, I kind of felt the article was a lot like saying - "Fire - hot" Most of us had already figured it out even if we didn't have some near random numbers cultivated from numerous speeches to substantiate the conclusion.

I don't know, Joe, I talk to plenty of people who say, "Of course they found weapons of mass destruction." I think it comes from that Senator who said they found them, along with the bogus reporting on finds - mustard gas shells, a safe house with chemicals, and other things like that. Also, I think a lot of people can't admit that they were wrong or deceived, so it is easier to cling to the notion that the weapons were there, you know, North, South, East, and West of Bagdhad, just like Rummy said they were.
